what is PPI - Payment Protection Insurance?

If you have borrowed money on a loan, credit card or mortgage – you may have been sold or been forced to take out something that is called Payment Protection Insurance (PPI).  You may be owed thousands of pounds in compensation.  Payment Protection Insurance is designed to protect the borrowers’ ability to maintain their repayments in the event that they get sick, or unable to work through an accident or unemployment.

If you have taken a loan, credit card or any other finance in the last 10 years with payment protection insurance, you could be eligible to claim all of this money back. In many cases, PPI is unnecessary, unsuitable and was mis sold as the policy can offer little or no benefit. Although this information should be obtained from you at the outset the lenders have tended to make a sale regardless of making sure the policy was suitable to yourself. This means when you come to make a claim, the insurance usually doesn’t cover your needs.

Of course insurance can prove very important  – the problem for people whom purchase PPI is that the policy can offer little or no benefit.  The exclusions lists and payment schedules are designed for maximum profits for the banks.  Although this information should be obtained from you at the outset the lenders have tended to make a sale regardless of making sure the policy was suitable to yourself. This means when you come to make a claim, the insurance usually doesn’t cover your needs.

how do I know if i have been mis-sold a payment protection policy?

When you were sold the policy your advisor should have made sure the payment protection insurance was appropriate for your circumstances at the time the advice was given.

Please check below to see if any are applicable to you:

  1. You were told you had to take out PPI or you would not get the loan
  2. You were self employed or unemployed at the time of the loan
  3. You felt pressured into taking the PPI
  4. You paid off your loan early and never got a PPI refunded
  5. You were told with PPI you had a better chance of being accepted for the loan
  6. You were lead to believe that the PPI policy was compulsory
  7. You increased or topped up your loan and the PPI was added automatically

can i reclaim on any PPI policy?

Your claim for compensation is dependent on when you took the insurance. PPI sales only came under the jurisdiction of the FSA in January 2005. Any sales made before then are not covered by the latest rules.

However, it may still be worth complaining if you feel you have been mis-sold. If you bought before January 2005 it is likely that they will have been covered by a previous regime of rules. This means that the Financial Ombudsman Service will be able to consider these complaints.

If you took PPI after January 2005, your claim is subject to the latest rules.

Don’t forget that our no win, no fee. If we are unsuccessful with your claim you will not have anything to pay.
